Welcome to ISER!

The purpose of the International Symposium on Educational Reform (ISER) is to provide venues for university graduate students, educators, professors, practitioners and policymakers to examine educational reform from a global perspective, discuss common issues facing educational leaders, and to promote international understanding.

ISER BACKGROUND

In 2004, the Commonwealth Consortium for Educational Administration and Management (CCEAM) convened its meeting at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and at East China Normal University.  A group of faulty members attending the CCEAM Conference recognized the need for their students to understand education reforms in other nations as well as strategies for school, district and system-level change and organized the International Symposium on Educational Reform (ISER). The purpose of ISER is to provide venues for university graduate students, educators, professors, practitioners, and policymakers to examine a wide array of common issues associated with educational reform including the role of leaders in improving schools and student learning, teacher and student leadership, teacher quality, technology leadership as well as organizational and systems change. This group was instrumental in facilitating their respective international research universities executing bi-lateral Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) among themselves including: the University of Kentucky (USA), East China Normal University (National Training Center for Secondary School Principals, Shanghai, China), the University of Jyvaskyla (Finland), the University of Pretoria (Republic of South Africa), and Universidad de San Francisco Quito (Ecuador) to facilitate collaborative research and advance graduate studies. Convening the annual ISER Conference is one aspect of international university cooperation. Although ISER is university-based, it recognizes the need for working closely with practitioners, policymakers and the private sector in launching innovations and sustaining educational reforms. This commitment is reflected in its annual conference venues.  The annual ISER Conference reflects a shared commitment to scholarship and engagement with practitioners, policymakers and the private sector in launching and sustaining educational reform.  Since 2010, ISER has been affiliated with associations that share common interests including the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA) (Joint Program Center for the Study of the Superintendency and Governance), the International Superintendent Research Network (ISRN) and the American Education Research Association (AERA) Research on the Superintendency (SIG).
